About the RCC

The National Centers of Excellence in Women's Health and National Community Centers of Excellence in Women's Health Research Coordinating Center (RCC) was established in 2003 with funding in part from the FDA's Office of Women’s Health to carry out a multisite study “Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of Selected Antibiotics During Pregnancy” and from funding from the DHHS Office of Women’s Health.

The purpose of the RCC is to facilitate the performance of collaborative high quality research in women's health among the National Centers of Excellence. Together, the Centers serve a wide variety of socio-economically and ethnically and racially diverse populations of women located throughout the US. Many of the Centers have experience in recruiting women from their own clinical programs into clinical research.

By facilitating collaborative research among the Centers, the RCC hopes to increase the likelihood that diverse populations of women will be included in clinical research, thus benefiting from such research. By better linking CoEs with the CCOEs, research questions can flow from the community to the academic institutions and research outcomes can be translated into clinical care in the community. By serving the Centers of Excellence, the RCC is uniquely situated to ensure that knowledge gained is shared across the nation.

Research Consortium

The Research Consortium is the advisory body for the Research Coordinating Center. The Consortium is made up of three committees; the Executive Committee, the Steering Committee and the Scientific Committee [click each committee link for a list of members].

The Research Consortium defines areas of research interest, circulates collaborative research opportunities and advocates for best principles in women’s health research for the member Centers and Community Centers of Excellence in Women’s Health.

The Steering Committee will explore external liaisons, including funding of the entire consortium as a group, and will develop a continuous mechanism for seeking ongoing external support. This committee will communicate with all Centers regarding interest in participation in protocols approved by the Scientific Committee.

The Scientific Committee will identify research themes and investigational agendas, and will solicit and evaluate letters of intent regarding research protocols to perform specific collaborative projects. Submissions will be evaluated, prioritized and passed on to the Steering Committee.

The Executive Committee will provide oversight to the two co-equal committees and will serve as the primary contact for external organizations to assist in the arrangement of clinical trials and other research activities at member CoE/CCOE sites.
