Finding NIH Extramural Research Funding Opportunities - Taking the First Step

The NIH is the largest funding source for academic research in the United States. You know you’re looking for NIH extramural research funding– but where to start?

The NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts is the official publication for NIH medical and behavioral research grant policies, guidelines and funding opportunities. It is also used by NIH Contracting offices and other Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) agencies, to announce their funding opportunities.

The NIH also has a weekly email list serve which is used to announce new funding opportunities. To subscribe to this list serve go to http://grants2.nih.gov/grants/guide/listserv.htm. Once you sign up, you’ll receive an e-mail each week with new NIH Guide postings and biomedical research grant funding opportunities.

For many new academic researchers, the first step in securing outside financial support is through an R01 investigator initiated grant application. For a comprehensive overview of the R01 application process head straight to Getting Funded PDF: portable document format. Getting Funded is Chapter 9 in a series called Making the Right Moves: A Practical Guide for Scientific Management for Postdocs and New Faculty PDF: portable document format published by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Burroughs Wellcome Fund, 2004.
