As of February 2004, the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development Bureau of Migrant, Refugee and Labor Services estimated the population of refugees and former refugees residing in Wisconsin at 65,149. Migrant and seasonal farm workers are also represented in Wisconsin.
Common barriers these populations face in receiving adequate and appropriate health care include the inability to navigate the health care system, limited access to health care services, language and cultural differences, low wages and underemployment, lack of insurance and/or underinsurance and lack of rights for undocumented families seeking to receive health care.
The University of Wisconsin’s National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health has a strong history and commitment to health promotion and outreach in helping women to lead healthier lives.
The MIROR directory lists agencies by County and includes information on agencies providing translation services, medical interpreters, bi-lingual health care providers, domestic violence prevention and other various community-based organizations throughout Wisconsin that work with immigrant and refugee women’s health.
